Job Description

Summary:

 

This
position provides project-based cataloging for sound recordings, and additional
formats as needed. The Acquisitions & Cataloging Department has identified
over 450,000 items in the Belfer
Audio Archive that require catalog records. This position reports to the Catalog
Librarian and may have supervisory responsibilities, including delegating work
to Bargaining Unit staff, interns, or student workers.

 

Responsibilities:

 

Primary
responsibilities:

  • Perform original cataloging or complex copy
    cataloging and classification primarily for sound recordings, using both
    MARC and non-MARC metadata; ensure that work adheres to both local and
    national guidelines and standards. Support metadata creation for non-traditional
    bibliographic material for ContentDM and SURFACE, Syracuse University’s
    Institutional Repository.
  • Working with librarians and supervisors,
    contributes to the integrity of access points: name, subject, and series
    authority files. Perform independent research to create name authority
    file records.
  • Resolve problems in cataloging and inventory
    uncovered in the course of project work.
  • Develop and maintain knowledge of latest trends
    and developments in bibliographic control; keeping abreast of developments
    in RDA, MARC, and other standards as applicable.
  • Assist in bulk catalog maintenance and report
    generation using cataloging utilities and software.
  • Deploy the most efficient means for
    accomplishing projects, using appropriate software and other applications
    to enhance productivity.
  • Provide support for high-priority cataloging
    projects as assigned; this may include assisting with grant-funded
    projects.  

 Secondary responsibilities:

  • Participate in continuing education,
    professional development, and training activities.
  • Attend meetings of the Acquisitions &
    Cataloging management team of librarians and supervisors as needed.

     

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s
    degree and at least two years of library technical services experience or
    equivalent; Masters’ Degree in Library or Information Science (ALA-accredited)
    preferred.
  • Familiarity with AACR2/RDA, LCSH, the MARC format, and other
    relevant standards, such as Dublin Core or VRA.
  • Knowledge of bibliographic utility such as OCLC and an
    integrated library system, such as Voyager.
  • Supervisory experience preferred.
  • Familiarity
    with office computer applications (databases, word processing, spreadsheets)
    required.
  • Familiarity
    with MacroExpress, SQL, MarcEdit or other cataloging utilities preferred.    
  • Music
    experience or background preferred

    Strong
    communication and interpersonal skills.
