Rowan University seeks a creative and dynamic librarian to serve as subject librarian to the College of Performing Arts. The librarian will have reference and music cataloging oversight responsibilities, develop and manage the Performing Arts Collection (PAC) physical and digital collections, and collaborate with members of the Rowan University community. This position will also support additional subject areas based on skills and interests.


This full-time tenure-track AFT (American Federation of Teachers) librarian position will report to the Director of Engagement, Research, & Scholarly Communication, serve as a member of the Research and Instructional Services Department in Campbell Library on the Glassboro campus, and work as a liaison with various colleges, particularly the College of Performing Arts located in Wilson Hall.


The successful candidate for this position will be hired at the rank of Librarian II (AFT Range 26) or Librarian III (AFT Range 22). This position includes some evening and weekend hours.


The librarian in this position will:

  • Deliver effective and innovative library instruction, and develop print and online instructional materials and tutorials for the College of Performing Arts and other assigned areas.

  • Provide individual research support for students and faculty, including reference desk service.

  • Assist College of Performing Arts faculty and students in contributing scholarly materials to Rowan Digital Works (RDW), Rowan University’s institutional repository.

  • Research digital humanities technologies and trends, and promote them to Performing Arts faculty and students; provide consultation on visual and digital arts and humanities methods and tools; participate on project teams as an active partner in the creation of digital humanities projects.

  • Provide consultation for Performing Arts faculty and students on the management and preservation of digital content through Rowan University’s Rowan Digital Collections Islandora-based website.

  • Partner with faculty and library colleagues to develop programming and services that support research and scholarship as well as recital support.

  • Maintain responsibility for collection development in assigned departments and programs, also including the review and potentially original work of Music items cataloged.

  • Serve on library committees, represent the library on university committees, and participate in relevant activities of state, regional and national organizations and associations.

  • Pursue appropriate presentation and publication opportunities expected of a library faculty member on the tenure track.

  • Contribute to special projects or serve on ad hoc committees at the request of the Director of Engagement, Research & Scholarly Communication.


Required qualification:

  • A Master degree in Library Science (MLS or MLIS) from a library school accredited by the American Library Association (or ALA recognized foreign equivalent) by the time employment commences.

  • An undergraduate degree or higher in a performing-arts related field.

  • Familiarity with performing arts-related resources.

  • Demonstrated initiative and ability to work both independently and collegially.

  • Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills.

  • Evidence of a strong service orientation.

  • Familiarity with computer systems, library tools, software, standards, and digital collections.

  • Familiarity with fields as diverse as Music Therapy, Music Industry, Musicology, Music Education, Music Theory, Theater, and Dance.

  • Flexibility and willingness to take on additional responsibilities as the needs of the library grow.

  • Commitment to excellent customer service in a user-centered environment.


Preferred qualifications:

  • Advanced degree in or experience with the Visual Arts, Performing Arts, Applied Arts, Radio, TV, Film, or Digital Humanities.

  • Demonstrated participation in national level associations in pertaining fields.

  • Experience in an academic library.

  • Experience with scholarly communication and/or assisting performing arts faculty sharing and publishing their scholarship.

  • Familiarity with cataloging and the Music Library Association’s Cataloging & Metadata committee.

  • Knowledge of one or more foreign language(s).
