California Institute of the Arts (CalArts) Library seeks an enthusiastic, service-oriented, collaborative and creative librarian to provide innovative reference and instructional services in the performing arts. The Performing Arts Librarian will join a team of six librarians and seven library staff who work directly with artists, theorists, and practitioners across the CalArts community.

Responsibilities
Public Service
-
Serves as the liaison to the faculty and students in the Schools of Dance, Music, and Theater to ensure their information needs are met, as well as to promote the Library’s services and resources.

Collaborates with performing arts faculty to develop and deliver programs and tools that align with information literacy learning outcomes in course-specific ways, including providing instruction sessions and assignments, research guides, and tutorials.

Creates, develops and maintains instructional materials, including web-based resource guides using LibGuides.

Provides individual research support and reference services for all library patrons, in-person, via email and by phone.

Works collaboratively with colleagues to provide innovative user-centered outreach services.
Collection Development and Management
-
Responsible for the selection, assessment and management of collections and resources in performing arts subject areas.

Works in cooperation with faculty of the Schools of Dance, Music, and Theater to acquire materials that support course offerings and performances.

Makes recommendations for electronic database subscriptions and other online products for dance, music, and theater.

Performs collection maintenance and weeding in performing arts subject areas.

In cooperation with the Circulation Supervisor and Access Services Librarian, insures the proper maintenance of the listening facilities, sound recordings, and performance scores.

Manages the cataloging and maintenance of CalArts’ performances.
Qualifications

Experience and interest in providing reference and research assistance.

Knowledge of, or experience with, the design and delivery of instruction in an academic library environment.

Understanding of publishing trends and issues in performing arts fields.

A strong commitment to excellence in public service.

The ability to work effectively in a collaborative and culturally diverse environment.

Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
Education and Experience
Required
-
MLIS (or equivalent) from an ALA-accredited program.
-
Undergraduate or graduate degree in dance, music or theater OR experience as a working performing artist OR experience with the dance, music, or theater industries OR experience working in a dance, music, or theater focused library.

At least two years of professional experience in an academic library.
Preferred
-
Experience providing reference, instruction and collection development in the performing arts.

Experience in music librarianship.

Education or experience with inclusive and culturally responsive pedagogy.
