NOTE: THIS IS A SEASONAL POSITION WORKING AUGUST THROUGH MAY EACH YEAR.

Responsibilities


Ensemble Library Management

  • Responsible for procurement and stewardship of music for the Large Ensembles

  • Supervise and prepare orchestral, band, choral and jazz ensemble music

  • Negotiate with publishing houses for purchases and rentals

  • Catalogue newly purchased works and reorganize physical space of existing works as necessary

  • Coordinate with campus and community ensembles regarding music and logistics as needed, as well as for curricular seminars and conducting degree recitals

  • Upkeep and schedule maintenance for library copier and equipment

  • Evaluate existing materials and resources for future initiatives including use, archival and disposal

  • Liaise with Assistant Director to ensure support of summer programs

Accountability

  • Institute and update music loan and return policies

  • Responsible for maintenance and upkeep of detailed distribution and collection databases to assure inventory control

  • Coordinate with conducting faculty to ensure student compliance with library procedures and policies

Archival

  • Research, evaluate and create access for archival materials and scores

  • Preserve historical materials and assess out-of-date editions for storage or removal

  • Research and understand the University of Michigan conducting faculty history

  • Spearhead long term projects of resource digitalization and preservation

Student Staff Management  

  • Supervise Student Library Assistants for completion of basic clerical tasks and copywork

  • Create opportunities for advancement within the student staffing structure

  • Coordinate extracurricular incentives to explore and understand the professional field


Required Qualifications

 

  • Bachelor’s degree in Music or the equivalent is required.  Master’s degree preferred.

  • Minimum one year of experience with ensemble operations or concert production at the college or professional level

  • Experience with ensemble library operations and music preparation required

  • Archival training or experience highly preferred

  • Patience, affability and a high level of dependability and work ethic

  • Demonstrated ability to remain calm and professional under pressure

  • Proven leadership skills in effectively motivating and managing student employees and interns

  • Initiative and willingness to work independently and as part of a creative team

  • Must be very detail-oriented and able to work on multiple projects with competing short and long-term deadlines

  • Superlative communication skills in person, in writing, and on the phone

  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite and Filemaker Pro

  • Ability to move large instruments and items as needed

  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with individuals from diverse communities and cultures

  • Ability to work nights and weekends as needed.
