Job Description

Stanford Libraries invite applications for the position of Operations Manager for the Music Library from individuals with a strong customer service philosophy, strong organization skills, and knowledge of music. The person in this position manages the daily operations of the Music Library branch located in the Music Department including circulation, course reserves, public services, and insures staffing during all open hours. The manager hires, trains, supervises, evaluates, and schedules student assistant staff for circulation, shelving, and processing materials for the library shelves. The individual participates in the development, implementation, and interpretation of policies concerning the organization, circulation and care of the collection; orders and maintains work supplies for the library; serves as the liaison with other library departments such as Serials, Binding and Finishing, Conservation, Privileges, IT, etc.; promotes patron satisfaction by successfully resolving circulation problems and assisting patrons to find materials that they need. The manager plans and supervises book stack shifts and the transfer of materials to the Auxiliary Library. The person provides IT support to staff in the library and insures that all public computers are functioning properly.

Minimum Requirements

Bachelor’s degree plus three or more years of experience in an academic library, or equivalent combination of education and relevant experience. Academic background or in-depth knowledge of classical music and the ability to read music through significant coursework or personal experience with a BA degree or equivalent in music is strongly preferred.

  • Proven track record with handling complex procedures from beginning to end.

  • Experience in searching online catalogs and/or databases.

  • Experience working in an academic or large public library system is desirable.

  • Demonstrated supervisory experience in complex environments.

  • Proven experience in day-to-day oversight of a highly variable workplace.

  • Strong analytical skills, proven ability to apply sound judgment and seek constructive solutions to problems.

  • Ability to take initiative, plan and prioritize work, and meet deadlines.

  • High degree of comfort in the use of computers in a networked environment for word processing, spreadsheets, database management, financial systems, and communication.

  • Demonstrated ability to learn and synthesize new information quickly.

  • Ability to communicate effectively in oral and written English.

Stanford Libraries consist of over nine million volumes and over 400 staff members. The Music Library was established in 1949 as a separate branch library and provides research support for all aspects of music scholarship with collections numbering over 130,000 books and scores, 300 periodical titles, 30,000 sound and video recordings, multiple streaming media databases and other digitized content. The staff of the Music Library also work closely with the Archive of Recorded Sound, one of most important sound archives in the United States with over 400,000 sound recordings ranging from early cylinder recordings to the latest digital files.
