General Summary

Serves as subject librarian to the School of Music, with Collection Development and Instruction responsibilities. Performs cataloging of music library materials in all formats and languages (including scores, sound recordings, monographs, video recordings, mixed media, and electronic resources). Incumbent uses complex copy cataloging from the OCLC international bibliographic utility, creates original records, and enhances incomplete or minimal master records as needed. This position also manages vendor record loads for online music resources (such as NAXOS). All cataloging must conform to national, consortial, state, and local standards for description, classification, and subject access; all headings must be under authority control. This position also serves as a resource person for music cataloging decisions in Milner Library.  


Required Qualifications

1. Bachelor’s or advanced degree in music and a relevant degree from ALA-accredited graduate program.

2. Extensive familiarity with the latest version of Resource Description and Access (RDA), Library of Congress/Program for Cooperative Cataloging Policy Statements, the Anglo-American Cataloguing Rules, Library of Congress Subject Headings, Library of Congress Classification, the American Library Association Filing Rules, and the Library of Congress Shelflisting Manual.

3. Extensive familiarity with the current version of the MARC formats for bibliographic records, authority records, holdings records, and code lists for countries of publication, languages, and countries of publication as implemented by OCLC and updated by online documentation such as Bibliographic Formats and Standards, OCLC Technical Bulletins, etc.

4. Extensive knowledge of music history, performance, literature and style periods, and specialized resources used in music cataloging.

5. Reading knowledge and ability to catalog in the romance languages.

6. Familiarity with the current OCLC interface for cataloging and authority records, the current version of the library’s integrated library system, and the appropriate coding and procedures for OCLC records to load correctly into the local and consortial catalogs.

7. Knowledge of music librarianship resources, best practices, current issues, and trends.

8. Strong commitment to customer service.

9. Ability to work effectively with all levels of patrons and colleagues.

10. Excellent interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills.

11. Ability to work collaboratively in a strongly collegial and participative environment.

12. Ability to manage diverse assignments in a rapidly changing organization.

13. If this position is Security Sensitive or if you are subject to a criminal background investigation based on University policy, then employment is contingent upon you passing a satisfactory criminal background investigation. You may not begin work until the criminal background investigation results have been received and cleared by Human Resources.  


Desired Qualifications

Necessary Licenses/Certifications/Degrees Bachelor’s or advanced degree in music and a relevant degree from ALA-accredited graduate program.  


Hiring Rate/Range: Commensurate with experience and qualifications  

Work Hours: Generally Monday – Friday 8:00 am – 4:30 pm with occasional weekend and evening hours as business needs dictate
