Job Summary

The Howard B. Waltz Music Library of CU Boulder welcomes applications for a Music Cataloging Specialist. This individual will be critical to the description, discovery, and use of music materials. This position will also be responsible for original and complex copy cataloging in music as well as authority work and database maintenance. Additionally, this position will also be a resource for music cataloging within the department and throughout the Libraries.

The Howard B. Waltz Music Library supports the teaching and research of students, faculty, and staff in music and the performing arts on campus. This is accomplished through multifaceted collections, services, and spaces.


What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be


Original and Copy Cataloging

  • Perform original and complex copy cataloging of music scores and sound recordings in multiple formats.

  • Create bibliographic descriptions in a mixed RDA/AACR2 environment using the MARC standard.


Authority Work and Database Maintenance

  • Manage routine and complex database maintenance related to music holdings.

  • Identify, analyze, and reconcile problems, conflicts, and errors in local bibliographic and item records.

  • Perform subject analysis and create supporting authority records following national standards and local practice.

  • Contribute to national programs, such the NACO Music Project and BIBCO Music Funnel.


Supervision

  • Serve as work-leader for the Library Technician III, ensuring that standards are met in music copy cataloging.

  • Provide training as appropriate.

  • Make changes to technical services workflow as needed to ensure efficiency.


Special Projects

  • Engage in special projects to enable content discovery.


Professional Development

  • Monitor cataloging trends and developments, in general, and specifically as they relate to music materials.

  • Engage with cataloging colleagues at CU and through professional listservs.

  • Stay informed about new developments in the delivery of music and music information.

  • Serve as a resource for music cataloging within the department and throughout the Libraries.


What We Can Offer

The anticipated salary range for this position starts at $50,000.00 and will be commensurate with background and experience.

What We Require

  • Bachelor’s Degree.

  • At least one year of music cataloging experience using RDA (with LC-PCC PS and Music Library Association Best Practices), AACR2, Library of Congress Subject Headings, Library of Congress Classification, MARC 21, and OCLC. This experience should include:

    • Broad knowledge of music history and music bibliographic resources.

    • Working knowledge of authority control.

    • Bibliographic knowledge of one or more Western European languages other than English.


What You Will Need

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

  • Curiosity about and an ease with new technologies.


What We Would Like You To Have

  • Undergraduate degree in music.

  • Master’s Degree or coursework in Library and Information Science.

  • Bibliographic knowledge of multiple Western European languages.

  • Knowledge of Innovative Interfaces Sierra and OCLC Connexion software.
