Job Description

Responsible for cataloging sound recordings, videos, and multimedia materials; cataloging of materials in other formats as needed.  Also assists with oversight of library Media Room and media collection development. Performs reference work, and assists with other aspects of library operations as necessary.

Responsibilities:

  • Perform original and copy cataloging of library sound recordings, videos and multimedia materials, as well as materials in other formats as needed
  • Work closely with other library catalogers and the Digital Media Librarian
  • Perform retrospective conversion work as necessary
  • Assist with catalog maintenance activities
  • Compile monthly and annual cataloging statistics
  • Contribute to media collection development
  • Assist with oversight of library Digital Media Library
  • Perform reference work and assist with other public service activities as required
  • Participate in library staff meetings
  • Prepare and revise procedure manuals and related documentation, as required
  • Assist with bibliographic instruction and library orientation tours
  • Work closely with Vice President for Library and Information Resources on areas of library planning and administration
  • Participate in relevant professional organizations, and attend conferences and workshops as assigned
  • During the nine months of the academic year, work one evening per week and generally one out of every five Saturdays

Qualifications:

  • ALA-accredited M.L.S. degree
  • Bachelor’s degree in music
  • Experience with original and copy cataloging on OCLC; knowledge of AACR2, RDA, international cataloging principles and practices, Library of Congress Subject Headings, and other relevant tools
  • Familiarity with sound recording and video cataloging
  • Foreign language facility, especially bibliographic knowledge of German, French and Italian
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, as well as the ability to function efficiently within a busy and demanding work environment
  • Knowledge of music reference sources
  • Strong commitment to library service
