Job Description

Position Summary:

Salary: $12 per hour

The Library Staff Supervisor’s primary responsibility, as part of a two member supervising team, is to plan, organize and supervise 12+ part time library student employees who are required to perform specialized technical duties involving varied library processes related procedures.The Library Staff Supervisor has direct responsibility for subordinates including hiring, training, evaluating, monitoring work performance, setting performance goals and providing an environment in which goals can be achieved and career development is fostered. The Library Staff Supervisor manages the library student employee’s daily work routine including planning, organizing, and prioritizing to meet the overall goals and objectives of the library. The Library Staff Supervisor’s responsibilities are primarily supervisory in nature.

Representative Responsibilities:

 The following responsibilities are general duties that a particular employee in this position may or may not be required to perform. The actual duties required of this position will vary.

  • Oversee the daily responsibilities of 12+ part time library student employees
  • Plans, schedules, and organizes work activities to meet the goals and objectives of the library
  • Plan, coordinate, conduct, and oversee the continuing education and training of library student employees on querying library databases, online catalog, the location of materials, and the overall customer service expectations of the library
  • Develop, implement, and revise library student employee workflow methods within the library
  • Establish, monitor, and ensure adherence to quality standards of library work and customer service exchanges
  • Recommend library student employee workflow adjustments in an effort to efficiently and effectively accomplish library goals and objectives
  • Ensure that adequate coverage of the circulation desk is maintained; filling in as necessary
  • Assist in the cataloguing of new or replacement library materials
  • Library Staff Supervisors may be cross-trained to perform the essential duties of the Curricular Materials Coordinator inclusive of the printing of college related materials

Knowledge and Competencies

  • A broad knowledge of music composition
  • Prior work experience or expertise gained preferably within an academic and / or music library
  • Technical expertise in working with ILS Systems, databases, copiers, printers, servers, and networks
  • Experience working directly with college or university faculty and students
  • Experience in spearheading and successful completion of large scale, detail oriented, projects
  • Expertise in working in a high volume, deadline oriented environment
  • Excellent time management and organizational skill
  • Ability to foster an environment of superior customer service, competency, and growth

Experience, Education, Certification:

  • Associates Degree; preferably in a music or related field
  • Familiarity with library reference, circulation, and bibliographic control procedures
  • Knowledge of automated library functions
  • Expertise in supervisory practices, principles, and techniques
  • Previous expertise in coordinating the work of a team, project leadership, or overall workflow management
  • Highly proficient skill in ILS Systems, Database Querying, Adobe Acrobat
  • Professional and Microsoft Word; Mac / PC
  • Ability to seamlessly understand and communicate with others
  • Previous experience or knowledge of cataloging for academic library purposes
  • Ability to create a thriving environment of continuing education
  • Previous experience or knowledge of academic library acquisitions purpose and protocol

  • Microsoft Word, Excel, Publisher, PowerPoint, Adobe Acrobat Professional
  • Gmail, Google Calendar and Google Docs (for collaboration)
  • Sibelius Music Notation Software

Work Environment/Physical Demands:

  • The following environmental / atmospheric working conditions are commonly, but not always, associated with the performance of this position.  The actual working conditions will vary.
  • High volume, fast paced environment requiring strict adherence to multiple simultaneous deadlines while overseeing a team and providing superior internal and external customer service
  • Ability to lift, stand, squat and carry 60+ pounds for hours at a time or sit for prolonged periods
  • Exceptional communicative skill both orally and via email within concise diplomatic exchanges
  • Ability to walk 6+ blocks between campus buildings, and climb stairs, within varying weather
  • Requires use of a computer, keyboard, monitor, and mouse for prolonged periods
