Job Description

The Vassar College Libraries are seeking a Library Specialist to participate in a part-time temporary grant-funded project to recatalog older printed musical scores in the DML collection for inclusion in the VC online catalog. This position reports to the Assistant Music Librarian. Primary responsibilities include copy cataloging of older printed musical scores.

Duties include: perform copy cataloging of printed music scores according to national and local standards for bibliographic description, classification, and name and subject access; verify name, title and all other access points in bibliographic records, assess and update local call numbers; maintain accurate statistics; coordinate the work of student assistants assigned to the project.

Qualifications
Coursework at the college level required. Coursework at the college level in the history and literature of western classical music strongly preferred. Familiarity with one or more foreign languages preferred. Previous library experience, especially cataloging in an integrated library system (ILS) or OCLC, preferred. Experience with office software applications (Word, Excel, FileMaker Pro or equivalent) desirable. Must be able to perform exacting work with attention to detail; work independently and as a member of a team, with minimal supervision; and be able to understand the inter-relatedness of tasks. Must be organized and self-motivated with a strong sense of responsibility. Excellent verbal and written communication skills are also required. Candidate must be able to work for extended periods at a computer workstation, lift moderately heavy library material, tolerate moderate levels of dust and odor generated during normal collections maintenance activities and movement of objects.
