Job Description

Dartmouth College Library seeks a forward-looking music librarian to provide strategic leadership for the Paddock Music Library in the Hopkins Center for the Arts, supporting faculty and students and the wider community in music and dance.  The Head of Paddock Music Library will help develop, sustain, and promote effective and user-centered library programs, services and collections to support and advance research, teaching and learning at the College. Most recently, the Head has partnered with faculty and co-educators to develop edX MOOCs on Italian opera (offered Fall 2015 and 2016) and a German opera edX course will be offered in Spring 2017.

Responsibilities:  Reporting to the Associate Librarian for User Engagement and Technologies, the Head of Paddock Music library provides management of the facility, budget, staff and collections of the music library; and actively participates in library-wide liaison services through research and instruction services in a flexible, collaborative, and innovative environment.  The Head is a member of the Library Management Group and participates in the development of library user services by serving on library-wide administrative and planning committees.

Qualifications:  ALA-accredited MLS degree in library and/or information science preferred, or a combination of an advanced subject or professional degree combined with relevant academic library experience.  Degree in music or equivalent background.  The ideal candidate will have proven leadership, management and interpersonal skills that encourage teamwork, supervisory experience, excellent communication and organizational skills, demonstrated ability to foster and manage change in a fast-paced environment, understanding and interest in educational technology and its applications in an academic library, demonstrated experience in providing varied forms of information and instruction, strong commitment to excellence in library user services, commitment to diversity and to serving the needs of a diverse population, and reading knowledge of two foreign languages, preferably German, French or Italian.

Rank and Salary:  The position is part of the Library Classification System of Professional Ranks.  Salary is commensurate with experience and qualifications.  Full benefits package including 22 vacation days, comprehensive health care, retirement plans, and relocation assistance.

About the Music Department and the Performing Arts:  Dartmouth College cultivates an environment that nurtures, encourages, and values creativity. The Department of Music, located in the Hopkins Center for the Performing Arts, offers topics such as The History of Jazz, Beethoven in Context, and Twentieth Century Music to the entire student body. The Masters Program in Digital Musics is an interdisciplinary program dedicated to exploring the interrelationships among music, composition and performance, design, technology, cognitive neuroscience, computer science, acoustics, and related disciplines. There is a range of opportunities for students to practice and perform music from chamber to contemporary music through the Hopkins Center ensembles. Music facilities include a rehearsal hall and recital hall, and practice rooms. In addition, the Bregman Electroacoustic Music Studio is a facility for playing and composing electronic music.
