Job Description

The University of Colorado Boulder Libraries invites applications from innovative and enthusiastic service-oriented professionals for the position of Head of Music Branch Library. This is a tenure-stream faculty position reporting to the Director of Arts & Humanities in the University Libraries.  The Waltz Music Library serves a research-intensive and performance-intensive College of Music at the University of Colorado Boulder as well as students and faculty across campus with interest in music. The branch library holds one of the most extensive music collections in the Western United States and includes comprehensive collections in several musical areas, including early American sheet music, tune books and hymnals, and French music, as well as other areas of particular strength. The branch library is part of the Arts & Humanities department in the library system. The Head of Music provides strategic guidance and direction for the branch; keeps abreast of changes in the field of music librarianship; manages a staff of 0.5 FTE librarian, 4 FTE staff, and 15 part-time student assistants; participates in collection development; and builds strong connections with the College of Music. Personnel management is an essential component of this position.

  • Master’s degree in Library and Information Science from an ALA accredited institution or equivalent
  • A degree in music or similar field
  • Professional experience in an academic or research library
  • Experience in management/supervision
  • Demonstrated ability to work both independently and collaboratively
  • Excellent organizational, interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability to cultivate and advocate for an environment of diversity and inclusion
  • Potential for research, scholarly work and/or professional achievement
  • Creative ideas about services and service assessment in a music context

Desirable Qualifications:

Evidence of any of the following will enhance a candidacy:

  • Graduate degree in music
  • Experience providing reference or instruction in an academic or research library setting
  • Interest in working with underrepresented or at-risk undergraduates
  • Experience in a music library or separate music collection
  • Reading knowledge of a non-English language
  • Record of research or professional service at the national level

Appointment and Salary:   

The successful candidate will be appointed as a full-time (12 month), tenure-stream faculty member. Minimum starting salary is $60,000.  Depending upon professional experience and demonstrated accomplishments in scholarly activity, creative work, and service, appointment may be at the level of assistant professor or above.  Preference will be given to candidates eligible to be hired at the associate professor level or above.  The salary is competitive and benefits include 22 working days vacation; 10 paid holidays; liberal sick leave; University group health care plan; group life insurance; TIAA/CREF, Fidelity, or Vanguard retirement/annuity; and support for scholarly/professional activities.  Tenured faculty members are eligible for sabbatical leave.
