Job Description

The Head of LaBudde Special Collections is responsible for a wide variety of duties related to providing access to materials, assisting the public in use of the collections, processing archival collections for patron use and preservation, providing assistance on use of collection materials, maintaining collections, coordinating on bibliographic access to materials, and supervising staff. The Head of LaBudde Special Collections actively manages departmental workflow and contributes to establishing priorities and policies. In addition to these responsibilities, the position monitors trends and developments in rare book and archives management, and recommends appropriate adoption and implementation of new technologies and methods for acquisition, access, and preservation. This position reports to the Assistant Dean of Special Collections and Archives.

 

Minimum Qualifications

  • ALA-accredited MLS, Master’s degree in Archives, or another appropriate field that includes relevant course work;

  • Experience working in special collections and/or archives;

  • Supervisory experience or successful experience managing a team;

  • Demonstrated knowledge of archival processing practices, understanding of archival standards including DACS and EAD, and awareness of national issues and trends in archives;

  • Demonstrated ability to work positively and productively with diverse constituencies in a dynamic environment;

  • Evidenced ability to work in a collegial fashion with undergraduate, professional and graduate students, faculty, researchers, alumni and community members;

  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a team-based, service-oriented environment;

  • Evidence of professional initiative, mature judgment;

  • Excellent oral, written, planning, and interpersonal skills;

  • Potential to meet promotion requirements in non-tenure track appointment.

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Knowledge of Kansas City history;

  • High density automated storage and retrieval system experience;

  • Grant-writing experience;

  • Experience implementing archival management software.

 

Full Time/Part Time: Full Time

 

Salary

This is a 12 month, ranked, non-tenure track faculty position . (See the Promotion and Appointments Criteria for rank specifications.) The minimum salaries for ranks are: Librarian I – $47,500, Librarian II – $50,000, Librarian III – $55,000.  Librarian IV salary is commensurate with rank and experience. UMKC offers an excellent retirement/benefits package.

 

Though this position is not a music librarian position, the division of Special Collections & Archives holds a number of music-focused collections and has worked closely with Conservatory faculty to create digital and physical exhibits documenting musicians in Kansas City. The person in this position will oversee public services and processing of collections for LaBudde Special Collections, the rare books and manuscripts repository at UMKC, but will also coordinate with the Marr Sound Archives on collections containing AV materials.
