Job Description

The University of Georgia Libraries seeks a Head of Music Cataloging Section who will be responsible to the Head of the Cataloging Department for performing original cataloging and for supervising three support staff members in copy cataloging of music scores, music sound recordings, moving image materials (music and additional subject areas), and other formats of music-related materials in all languages. The Music Cataloging Section is comprised of the Head and 3 FTE support staff members. This position serves as a resource for music cataloging within the Department and in other areas of the University Libraries.

The UGA Libraries’ Cataloging Department catalogs over 30,000 books, serials, microforms, and non-book materials yearly. The Department consists of 11 faculty and 16 support staff positions. The UGA Libraries’ music collection is the second largest in the southeast. The Head of Music Cataloging participates in the Cataloging Department management group. The University of Georgia Libraries participates in GIL, a statewide-interconnected implementation of the Ex Libris Voyager system and will be migrating to the Alma library management system in May 2017. The Department participates in the Program for Cooperative Cataloging (PCC), including NACO, SACO, and CONSER, as well as OCLC ENHANCE. In all activities, the goal is to develop a service-oriented, efficient, and effective staff.

The UGA Libraries is located on the university’s main campus in Athens, Georgia, and its facilities include the Main Library, Science Library, Zell B. Miller Learning Center, Map and Government Information Library, Repository and Special Collections Libraries. *Provides bibliographic access to music scores, music sound recordings, moving image materials (music and additional subject areas), and other formats of music-related materials by performing original and complex copy cataloging of these materials in Connexion, Voyager, and/or Alma, using RDA, AACR2, Library of Congress classification and subject headings. Local cataloging policies and priorities are also observed.

*Establishes priorities, plans staffing levels, coordinates activities, organizes workflow, and arranges for efficient movement of materials through Music Cataloging in consultation with the Department Head.

*Contributes to the quality and completeness of the local and national databases by revising and updating existing music records when necessary.

*Promotes the use of consistent headings in local and national files, and contributes to the efficiency of the national cataloging effort by establishing name, name-uniform title, and series authority records.

*Maintains staff, production, and workflow of the Music Section by training, supervising, evaluating, and assisting in hiring 3 support staff and student assistants responsible for copy cataloging of music scores, music sound recordings, music moving image materials and other formats of music-related materials.

*Serves as the primary resource person and liaison to Cataloging as well as other departments and library staff on matters relating to Music Cataloging policies and procedures.

*Maintains the quality of local and national cataloging by staying current with national and international trends in bibliographic control, especially as they relate to music materials.

*Functions professionally within and contributes to the successful operation of the Cataloging Department and the Libraries administration by participating in the Department’s policy-making process, as a member of Cataloging Department Section Heads and in other roles as assigned.

Enhances the regional and national status of the Libraries and the University and increases the quality of individual contributions to the Cataloging Department by participating in continuing education and professional development activities.

Fosters communication in every direction by actively engaging in the exchange of information and encouraging this activity in supervised staff.

Maintains flexibility and awareness of changes in the department and organization and contributes to the team effort by assuming other similar duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Required Qualifications:

ALA-accredited MLS; Bachelor’s degree in music or music-related discipline; Training in western classical music, including the ability to read printed music in staff notation; Knowledge of RDA, AACR2, and LC classification and subject headings; Knowledge of one or more Western European languages; Demonstrated ability to supervise; Familiarity with automated cataloging systems, such as Connexion, Voyager, and/or Alma ; Effective oral and written communication skills; Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships ; Strong interest in academic or research librarianship.

Preferred Qualifications:

Graduate degree in music preferred; Experience working in a consortial environment desirable.

SALARY AND BENEFITS: The minimum salary is $47,476 – salary commensurate with experience. UGA librarians are non-tenured faculty members.
