Primary Function of Organizational Unit:
A department of J.Y. Joyner Library and its only branch, the Music Library is located on the first floor of the A.J. Fletcher Music Center. This gem in the musical crown of eastern North Carolina is the largest music collection east of Raleigh. As such, it has grown from its original purpose of serving the educational mission of East Carolina University’s School of Music to serving the needs of music lovers, performers, and educators from all parts of the eastern North Carolina region, while continuing its primary focus on the needs of East Carolina University students, faculty, and staff, particularly the School of Music and the School of Theatre and Dance.

Job Duties:
This is a temporary, nine-month position in the Music Library. The person in the position is responsible for providing service desk staffing for the library’s evening hours through 10:00 pm, Monday through Thursday, with Friday hours may be spent working in the Administrative Office at Joyner. Additionally, this position supervises all student workers, including organizing, assigning and monitoring their activities. It ensures the delivery of fundamental library services, such as circulation desk duties, answering reference questions, assisting patrons with library technology, processing cashier deposits, assisting with course reserves maintenance, and closing the music library at night. Assisting with the completion of special projects, ensuring that patron services are provided in accordance with departmental policies and procedures, and other duties as assigned are also included among the job duties. This position may provide service desk staffing and student worker supervision as needed in the Administrative Office of Joyner Library.

Minimum Education/Experience:
High school diploma or equivalency and two years of experience in library services, office support, or related field; or equivalent combination of training and experience.

Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education:
General knowledge of academic libraries, library technical and public service functions, and the ability to use library techniques, systems, working tools and procedures in a public services setting is preferred; general knowledge of music; knowledge of, or experience in, the use of an integrated library system; knowledge of, and experience with PCs, Microsoft Office Suite; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships is desirable; ability to remain calm during stressful situations; friendly, excellent organizational skills and attention to detail; multitasking; ability to focus on long-term goals and adjust short-term priorities to meet those goals is preferred.
