Job Description

The Editor acquires and edits all titles published in MLA Index and Bibliography Series. This series includes bibliographies, indexes, checklists, discographies, and other types of guides to music and music literature. All areas of music study are covered, including classical music, popular music, world music, historical bibliography, and projects with potential to reach the broader musical public. The series is co-published with A-R Editions, Inc.

Position Details

• Solicits and receives manuscripts

• Selects manuscripts for publication in cooperation with A-R Editions and after consultation with appropriate readers

• Works with authors in the preparation of the manuscripts from the proposal stage through publication

Works with the A-R editor on CFPs, proposal reviews, and manuscript reviews

• Submits regular reports to the MLA Board

• Serves as a member of the MLA Publications Committee and attends meetings as required 

Term

The initial term of appointment is one year, with annual reappointment possible to a maximum term of five years. The MLA Board reviews the performance of the editor annually. The President reappoints upon successful review and the desire of the incumbent to continue. The successful candidate will be appointed prior to the February 2017 annual business meeting in Orlando, 25 February 2017 and is expected to attend annual Publications Committee meetings beginning in February 2018.

Qualifications

• Experience with scholarly editing

• Excellent writing and communication skills

• Familiarity with music indexing and bibliographic tools and techniques

• Familiarity with the latest edition of The Chicago Manual of Style

• Familiarity with the MLA Index & Bibliography Series

• Knowledge and experience with current publishing procedures

• Broad knowledge of music reference resources

• Ability to think creatively about possible series content, and to motivate and encourage potential authors to bring projects to a timely completion

• Broad knowledge of and several years of experience working in the music library profession

• Successful publications in the area of the series preferred

• Current membership in MLA

Honorarium

$350 per title (upon publication)
