Job Description

Position Summary

The Arthur Mendel Music Library seeks an energetic, production, and service-oriented person to manage the Collection Services and Processing area; to oversee the design and maintenance of the Music Library’s website; to assist with creating metadata and processing documents for the Digital Library; to process materials for transfer to ReCAP; and to partner in all aspects of public service.

Supervises the circulation and electronic services areas in the absence of their supervisors, and manages the Music Library when is individual is the only staff member on duty.

This position provides leadership for student workers, interprets and enforces library policies, monitors computers, imaging, and sound/video playback equipment, and provides basic technical assistance to patrons. Answers queries about the library’s materials, electronic resources, and services, and helps with other branch technical services work as needed, including assisting with collection development and special projects.

The position reports to the Deputy University Librarian.

Essential Qualifications

Position Requires:

Self-starter with the ability to prioritize, be highly productive, solve problems, and perform sustained and accurate detail work at a computer and with print materials.

Affinity for teamwork, leadership, and to be flexible and resourceful in a busy, public, and fast-paced environment.

Ability to communicate, interact, and cooperate effectively with the public and colleagues across numerous departments.

Recent experience supervising students and managing projects.

Excellent verbal and written communication and negotiation skills.

Experience with metadata formats and conventions, knowledge of XML, and a proclivity for learning complex specialized software used to process, organize, and describe documents for the Digital Library.

Adept with Web-authoring tools, desktop productivity software and scanning equipment, and basic knowledge of computer hardware, printers, and sound and video playback equipment.

Ability to read music, fluency with the common formats of published and recorded music, and relevant knowledge of at least one of the performing arts disciplines.

Aptitude and recent experience working with bibliographic conventions and descriptive details in several languages, and relevant experience searching online catalogs and databases.

Reading knowledge of one foreign language relevant to Mendel.

Bachelor’s degree with academic work in the humanities.

Minimum two years of experience in an academic, research, or special library, or a public library with a strong research collection.  

Preferred Qualifications

Facility with Voyager cataloging and circulation modules, ORRS, and Blackboard, or equivalent.

Coursework in digital humanities or digital libraries.

Coursework in music history, world music, performance, or musical theater. Working knowledge of HTML/CSS programming languages, Dreamweaver software, and/or the Drupal content management system.

Experience with antiquarian library or archival collections. Reading knowledge of German, French, or Italian.

The final candidate will be required to complete a background check successfully.
