  • Dual Degree Program available

    • The Department of Library and Information Science and the Benjamin T. Rome School of Music, Drama, and Art offer a joint-degree program in music librarianship in which students take 30 semester hours of graduate credit in library and information science and 21 hours in the graduate program in musicology. The degrees are conferred simultaneously after all requirements for both degrees have been met.

    • If a student is not enrolled in the joint-degree program, a maximum of 6 credit hours taken in the School of Music may be counted toward the Master of Science in Library Science degree.

    • Classes are offered at the Catholic University of America main campus and the Library of Congress. Classes are delivered through face-to-face meetings and a blended format that combines online learning with face-to-face meetings.

  • Library Science Degree with Music Concentration

    • Students may apply for the dual masters program (MA Musicology or Music Theory/MLS Master of Library Science). Students apply for admissions to both SLIS and Music. There is also a Music Librarianship Specialization option within the MLS degree. The IU music librarians will also review for admissions to this specialization. Other specializations of interest to music majors include Rare Books and Manuscripts Librarianship and Digital Libraries. The Master of Information Science degree also offers options for music majors.

    • Students may enroll simultaneously in the programs in librarianship and music. The MS in Information and Library Science degree requires 36 credit hours; the MA in music history or music theory requires 32 credit hours. Credits may not be shared (“double-counted”) between programs. The program generally requires five semesters and a summer session to complete. Students must be accepted by both the Department of Information and Library Studies and the Music Department.

    • 36 credit hour online ALA-accredited master’s program. Our university’s graduate school has the option for students to do dual degrees (share 9 hours between programs). Students interested in this option should speak with the admissions staff for their respective programs of interest before submitting their application.

    • While we do not have a specific course related to music and music librarianship, we do allow students to pursue practicums and an independent study option if they so wish.

    • If a student is dual enrolled, only 9 credits may be shared between two master’s degrees. For traditional library students not enrolled in a dual degree program, up to six hours of cognate area courses may qualify toward the MSLS.

    • The iSchool Music double degree prepares students to work as music librarians or music digital resource managers, particularly for positions that require a stronger scholarly music background than a BA in music. Graduating students might be employed in educational, cultural heritage, or commercial environments working with both physical and digital materials. Examples might include: music librarian at an academic institution, librarian or audio resource manager at a museum, or digital audio asset manager for a commercial organization.

      Students completing the double degree program would earn both degrees.

    • A coordinated degree program in music librarianship is offered, combining the MM degree (with a concentration in music history and literature) with the MLIS degree. A total of 54 credits is required, 24 credits in music and 30 in library and information science. Students must meet all admission requirements of the School of Information Studies, the Music Department (Peck School of the Arts), and the Graduate School.
